MONTEREY, Calif. - October 22, 2007 - For the fourteenth consecutive year, the Portola Plaza Hotel at Monterey Bay has been singled out by the California Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) for its innovative and proactive initiatives to reduce waste. As one of only three hotels in the state of California to be honored, the Portola Plaza Hotel at Monterey Bay hopes to motivate and inspire other local hotels and businesses to engage in the same environmentally sustainable business practices.

The WRAP award honors California businesses for leadership in waste reduction, waste prevention, recycling, reuse and buying recycled-content products. This award program is sponsored by the Integrated Waste Management Board, California's primary recycling agency and a part of the California Environmental Protection Agency, to acknowledge proactive environmental efforts on the part of the business community.

The Portola Plaza Hotel at Monterey Bay is a 379-room, full service hotel. Located adjacent to the Monterey Conference Center, the hotel recycles, reuses or donates nearly every type of waste item that is generated. From bottles and cans, to cooking oil and wire hangers, they believe that almost everything has a "second life".

Established in 2000, the "Green Mile" is an area in the hotel where virtually any type of item can be found and reused by hotel staff for free. Portola Plaza Hotel at Monterey Bay estimates that their waste reduction efforts divert nearly 150 tons of waste from the landfill on an annual basis, saving over $10,000 in disposal costs every year.
