Zimbabwean Artists Gedion and Moses Nyanhongo Visit Cannery Row
Brothers from the Zimbabwe sculpture movement to appear at Gallery i Fine Art
The Nyanhongo brothers will offer a rare performance of their sculpting techniques. Using hand tools on beautiful Zimbabwean stones, they bring a contemporary interpretation to a traditional art form passed down through generations.
Born into an artistic family, both Gedion and Moses learned to sculpt from their father, Claud Nyanhongo, a prominent first generation artist of the Zimbabwe sculpture movement started in the late 1950s. Along with five other siblings of international sculpting fame, Gedion and Moses are proud to be part of the acclaimed Nyanhongo family.
"You have to set your own creative standards and define your own approach early to succeed in art," Moses explains. "What's most interesting with my work is its quality to be easily understood by viewers. In my finishing detail, I want to have contrast and texture as my trademark style. The combination of dark and light colors, polished and unpolished parts of my sculpture; these are thing I feel convey a powerful, differentiating style in my work."
Gedion describes his approach, "The messages I try to convey in my sculptures are as old as the hills. If they take you to a place where love and hope prevail, then you have listened well."
