Monterey, Calif. - Thirty top junior golfers competed in the 8th Annual Carmel Valley Kiwanis Fiesta Golf Tournament at Pasadera Country Club Monday, sponsored by Frank DeAnda's Love Chevrolet. Proceeds this year benefited Chartwell School, which specializes in educating dyslexic students.
Junior golfers from Carmel, Carmel Valley, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Seaside, Soquel and Prunedale, who were selected based on their performance and recommendation by coaches and teaching pros, completed the 144-player field in a best-ball competition. Each junior completed the adult foursome teams. In addition, special guest, 15-year-old Matt Miller, was honored during the tournament for his accomplishments and community service. Miller's research helped Chartwell receive a major foundation grant, which will be administered by the school and instituted by the Pacific Grove Unified School District. It is a three-year project beginning this fall under the direction of Doug Brown, Special Education Coordinator. Miller's school project on dyslexia was used in part by Chartwell, which was then developed into a grant proposal. Miller became interested in the subject of dyslexia because of his younger brother, Andrew, who is dyslexic and was a student at Chartwell School.This year's top foursomes included: first place: Bruce Michels, Pam Michels, Dick Love, Sydney Burlison; second place: Doug MacIsaac, Brent MacIsaac, Gary Wiranda, Tony de Berry; third place: Chris Aldrich, Bruce Pestana, Jim Manwan, Richard Matusich; fourth place: Kent Zilliox, Kevin Smith, Mike Wiggins, Bentley Eidsmo. Closest to the pin in the hole-in-one contest was John Bower and winner of the straightest drive contest was Mike Wiggins.
