PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.-A kick-off held today celebrated Stevenson School's 50^th birthday. Students, parents, faculty, staff and friends gathered at Wilson Field on Stevenson's Upper School campus to share in the festivities. A barbecue, live music, dancing and birthday cake were enjoyed by all. "We are very proud of our distinguished graduates and the many and varied contributions they have made to society over the first 50 years of the school's history," Stevenson President Joe Wandke told the crowd. "As we begin our second half-century, we will continue to commit our time, our resources and our efforts to providing a positive environment and an extraordinary learning experience for young people."

In 1952 Robert and Marian Ricklefs saw the realization of a long-held dream-the establishment of a boarding school on the Monterey Peninsula. The Ricklefs called it the Robert Louis Stevenson School, honoring the well-known author who reportedly found inspiration for his tales of high adventure during his 1870s sojourn in the Monterey area. Robert Ricklefs served as headmaster until he retired in 1970 when he was succeeded by Gordon Davis. During Davis' term the school opened its doors to girls as day students. Wandke arrived at Stevenson in 1983, and during his tenure the school embarked on a major building program and opened its doors to girls as boarding students.

From its inception, Stevenson School has continued to uphold its mission to provide educational opportunities for young people while preparing students for continued academic success, kindling their delight in learning and helping them to shape joyful lives.

Today Stevenson is a leader among independent schools worldwide, as well as on the Peninsula. With two campuses, the Upper School in Pebble Beach (grades 9-12) and the Lower and Middle School in Carmel (grades K-8), Stevenson is able to accommodate students of all ages and backgrounds. In fact, the Upper School is home to boarders from over 13 states and 15 foreign countries.
