PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.--Stevenson School is playing host this week to five Russian high school students from "closed nuclear cities" that are home to Russia's nuclear research and development. The students, along with a group of Russian teachers, are visiting Monterey this week to attend a conference sponsored by the Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

The students have been staying in the dorms at the school, attending classes and touring the Monterey Peninsula in advance of the conference, which begins on Friday. Yesterday, the Russian teachers observed classes at Stevenson and met with faculty members after school.

On Friday and Saturday, four freshmen from Stevenson will join the Russian students and students from across the U.S. at the Critical Issues Forum 2003 Student-Teacher Conference, sponsored by the Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Casa Munras Hotel, in Monterey. The forum is the center's international program for nonproliferation education in secondary schools.

The year-long program brings together experts in weapons of mass destruction and high school students and their teachers to study the weapons and strategies to stop their spread. This weekend they will make group presentations on this year's topic: Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Middle East and South Asia.

The Center for Nonproliferation Studies works to combat the spread of weapons of mass destruction by training the next generation of nonproliferation specialists and disseminating timely information and analysis.
