Skip Barber Racing School Donates 17 Engines to Sequoia Institute for Auto Technology Instruction
"We had a request from the president of Sequoia Institute, Lane Hart, to integrate our Dodge race engines into their program," said Mike Hubbard, who is the team manager for Skip Barber at Laguna Seca. "They had been using a variety of engines that they picked up at various sources.
"We were able to accommodate them with 17 two-liter Dodge motors, the same motors used in our racing school Formula Dodges."
In addition, Skip Barber Racing School donated a number of engine parts, heads and accessories and they are fabricating an engine dyno stand so the students can install the engines and actually see them run.
"This is a revamping of our engines lab," said Hank Gamel, Director of Development for Sequoia Institute. "We have dedicated that lab to Skip Barber Racing."
One of the first classes students will be taking will be an introduction to racing course, Gamel said. "In about six weeks, they will have the ability to drop the engine in a shell just like the race car, put it on the dyno and see how it performs." The students will be graded on that performance.
Skip Barber Racing School, the Official Racing School of CART, is the pre-eminent racing and driving school in the nation with 25 years experience in the business. Every year, the Barber-CART Scholarship Ladder offers over $1.3 million in scholarships to deserving young racers to assist in their climb up the racing ladder.
Sequoia Institute, in business for 36 years, is a private, for profit technological school concentrated on two specialties: automotive technology and heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Course work resulting in associate degrees, diplomas and certification is available.
