Six Stevenson Seniors Named as Semifinalists in National Merit Scholarship Competition
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.--Six Stevenson seniors were named as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition and will advance to the next round of competition.
They are Carrie Browde of Santa Cruz, Benjamin Cooper of Portola Valley, Shannon Garber of Carmel, Nicholas Hawley of Pebble Beach, Michael Silberman of Aliso Viejo, and Jason Steinberg of Aptos.
Of the 1.3 million juniors in the U.S. who took the PSAT last year, 16,000 advanced to semifinalist status. To become finalists-and to be considered for a National Merit Scholarship-the seniors must demonstrate a high academic performance, gain recommendations from their school leadership and post SAT scores that confirm their PSAT success. The application for finalist status includes a personal essay and information about school and outside activities.
Some 90 percent of semi-finalists are expected to advance to finalist status, with about 8,000 of those students earning National Merit Scholarships. Scholarship winners will be announced in the spring and throughout the early summer.
