MONTEREY, CA. – Saucito Land Company completed the earthquake retrofit work being done inside the building located on the corner of Washington and Pearl Streets in downtown Monterey.  The four businesses that occupy the building were temporarily relocated and have started moving back into the building.

Bay Bikes at 486 Washington Street reopened on April 1^st and East Village Coffee House at 498 Washington Street reopened on April 2^nd. Creative Images Photography at 241 Pearl Street and Carpe Diem Fine Books at 247 Pearl Street will move back into the building later this week.

"The project could not have gone better", states Jerry Anderson, Agent for Saucito Land Company.  "There were some surprises once we started getting into the walls, which was to be expected since it is an old building, but our contractors did a great job.  Our tenants are very pleased to be moving back in."

In 1986, the State of California enacted a law requiring seismic retrofitting for existing unreinforced masonry buildings.  The state has yet to assign a deadline when buildings must be in compliance, so in an attempt to mitigate the impact to the businesses Saucito Land Company planned the retrofit work in three phases.  Phase one work was completed in 2000 and phase two was done in 2006.  This phase of the project, phase three, was the final step needed to bring the building to compliance and the retrofit of the entire building is complete.
