CARMEL, Calif. - March 12, 2010 - Working with the Santa Lucia Conservancy, a film crew from National Geographic television filmed for days along the 20,000 acre Santa Lucia Preserve and throughout various locations in Big Sur, capturing images of expansive landscapes and various wildlife that live among the community. Some of the animals filmed include a cougar, red-tailed hawk, California condor, sea otters and sea lions. Big Sur: Wild California is set to air on the National Geographic channel on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 10:00PM.

California's Big Sur coastline is one of the most pristine wildernesses on earth. This scenic meeting of land and sea boasts more than 200,000 acres of prime wildlife habitat - almost all of it undisturbed by humans. Stretching 20 miles long and 90 miles wide, its breadth is host to a number of organisms that endure the daily struggle to survive.

The Santa Lucia Preserve is a 20,000 acre private community located in the Santa Lucia Mountains, minutes from downtown Carmel. Limited to just 300 homes, the Preserve was developed on a model that balanced human settlement with sustainable biological conservation and features the natural beauty of oak woodlands, savannas, grasslands, wetlands, and forests of redwood and Monterey pine that rise 100 to nearly 3,000 feet. The area holds 54 distinct habitats virtually hidden from outside view by the surrounding ridges of the Santa Lucia Range, which plunges into the sea at Big Sur.

With the establishment of an independent non-profit land trust, the Santa Lucia Conservancy, 90 percent of the Preserve's 20,000 acres have been set aside in perpetuity as wildlife habitat, allowing families to enjoy the same untouched landscape for generations.
