Monterey, Calif. - October 6, 2005 - Students this Fall at Santa Catalina School have been busy donating their time, collecting toys and clothes and raising funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina.  Through a variety of events and small fundraisers, Santa Catalina has raised over $6,600 dollars and is continuing to collect donations. All proceeds collected, benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina through equally-divided donations to the American Red Cross and Catholic Relief Services.
 
Students organized Karnival for the Cause to provide an afternoon of outdoor games for children and a little rest for parents, with the main goal to generate Hurricane Relief funds. Exceptional supervision was provided and $1000 was raised, as 50 Upper School students cared for 50 child participants. Children enjoyed swimming, field games, tennis and volleyball lessons, face painting and a cupcake walk.

Other efforts included student Hurricane Katrina bracelet sales and a Labor Day picnic for the Lower School that included over 200 families and raised $5,600 for Hurricane Relief. Through a joint-effort with Girl Scout Troops in Monterey, the Bears to Care program sent over 200 teddy bears from Santa Catalina families to the youngest survivors of Hurricane Katrina.

"The personal effort put forth by the students and their families involved in organizing the Karnival, as well as support from the Santa Catalina community in other Relief events shows true compassion for survivors of such a devastating event," said Head-of-School Sister Claire.

Santa Catalina students also participated in the "Outfit in a Bag" clothing drive along with other local businesses, schools and non-profits.  Students and their families donated complete outfits of gently used or new clothes to Hurricane Katrina survivors in the Houston area.
