MONTEREY, CALIF. – Santa Catalina School will present four showings of its fall musical, My Fair Lady, the story of Henry Higgins, who takes a bet that he can transform the unrefined Cockney Eliza Doolittle into a lady and fool everyone into thinking she really is one. Performances are Friday, October 15 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, October 17 at 2:00 p.m.; and Friday, October 22 at 12:15 p.m. in the school's Performing Arts Center.

The cast of 45 girls has been working for months to master an array of British dialects, including Eliza Doolittle's Cockney accent and Henry Higgins' mannered upper class English.

"The challenge is to have our actors speak Cockney and formal British English in a passable, believable and understandable way," says Roger Thompson, chair of the Theatre Arts department. "The dialect and speech patterns have to be believable but also understandable for an American audience."

Sophomore Emily Hunter will play Eliza Doolittle, her first principal role at Santa Catalina School. Seniors Emily Grunwald and Alex Opechowski, who played principal roles in last year's production of The Crucible, will star as Henry Higgins and Colonel Pickering.

Junior Jinny Kim will act as stage manager, directing a crew of 12 girls. Students independently handle all lighting, sound and set changes involved in each Santa Catalina School productions. My Fair Lady has 13 different scenes. All staging is unique and has been created at Santa Catalina School.
