Salvation Army Presents Prestigious “Others” Award to Sabu J.R. Shake and Chris Shake at the Sixth Annual Sabu's Safari
Fundraiser Hits Record Year for the Amount Raised for the Salvation Army, Monterey Peninsula
MONTEREY, CALIF. – Major David Yardley and Major Gaylene Yardley of the Salvation Army presented the prestigious "Others" Award to Sabu J.R. Shake and Chris Shake at the sixth annual Sabu's Safari held at the Hyatt Regency, Monterey on October 5, 2013. The "Others" Award is the highest award the Salvation Army can bestow on a non-member. It is given to individuals that have contributed substantially to the benefit of others.
"We are honored to present this award to the Shake Family. It is well deserved and we thank them for their tireless support of the Salvation Army. We celebrate them for their vision, generosity and willingness to go the extra mile for those in need in our community," states Division Commander, Lt. Colonel Stephen Smith.
The "Others" Award is rooted in the history of The Salvation Army, dating back to the early 1900s when General William Booth, the Army's founder, sent a one word telegram encouraging his officers around the world to focus on "others". Following that history The Salvation Army honors individuals or organizations exemplifying an extraordinary spirit of service to others through support of The Salvation Army and the community.
The award is icing on the cake at the sixth annual Sabu's Safari, as this year's event was an overwhelming fundraising success. The sold out event raised over $200,000.00 for the Salvation Army, which is more money raised than in any previous year and surpassed the Shake Family's goal for 2013.
"We are extremely happy that the community comes together each year to support the Salvation Army, which continues to make a difference in the lives of those in need in our region," said Sabu Shake, Jr.
Sabu Shake Sr., a well-known restaurateur and philanthropist, passed away in 1998. The Shake family honors his memory and legacy of giving with several very special charitable celebrations in partnership with the Salvation Army, Monterey Peninsula Corps. Since Shake Sr.'s passing, $1,350,000.00 has been raised for the Salvation Army, Monterey Peninsula Corps.
