Salinas, Calif.--On January 28, 2004 The Housing Authority of the County of Monterey (HACM) received exciting news from The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). HUD released the new area median income limits, positively impacting the eligibility requirements for federal housing programs in Monterey County greatly. Focusing on Monterey County, the new median income for a family of four is now $60,800 a 6.4% increase. HACM expects the state to update their income limits for their housing programs based on HUD's new numbers very soon.

According to the HACM, this increase in area median income will positively affect Section 8 and public housing, enabling more families to be eligible for help. In addition these new statistics will also help in closing the gap of affordability in Monterey County. Mary Jo Zenk, Deputy Executive Director of the HACM said, "This increase in the HUD area median income for Monterey County will help many more working families in Monterey County be eligible for a variety of federal, state and local housing programs, including homeownership programs such as down-payment assistance."

The HACM has successfully leased 100% of Section 8 vouchers, providing assistance to more than 4,000 families and $28M federal dollars of rental assistance to private landlords in Monterey County. The HACM's mission is to provide, administer, and encourage quality affordable housing and related services to eligible residents of Monterey County. The HACM provides a variety of housing and services through Section 8 Vouchers, public housing, migrant and farm worker housing, resident services, and many other housing programs. The HACM partners with a broad spectrum of community non-profits, city and county agencies, and state organizations to address affordable housing and housing shortage issues.
