Monterey Institute of International Studies to Host "a Global Feast With Ted Turner" for 50th Anniversary Celebration
MONTEREY, Calif. - February 21, 2006 - The Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) is celebrating 50 years of educating the next generation of world leaders with A Global Feast with Ted Turner March 11. Turner, chairman of the United Nations Foundation and co-chairman of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, will speak to the topic of being a global citizen.
Founder of the Cable News Network (CNN) and numerous other media outlets, Turner is one the most influential philanthropists in the United States. He originated the international, multi-sport Goodwill Games, created the United Nations Foundation, which awards grants in support of the goals and objectives of the United Nations, and founded the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a foundation focused on the global response to the threat from nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons.
The gala event will be a strolling dinner with international foods prepared by the Culinary Center of Monterey. MIIS students from around the world dressed in their native attire, along with musicians and dancers, will add to the international bazaar theme of the night. The global theme of the gala highlights the fact that MIIS has the largest percentage of international students of any graduate professional school in the nation.
MIIS recently became an affiliate of Middlebury College in Vermont, a leader in international education for undergraduates, with an aim to expand its international reach. Clara Yu, former vice president of languages and director of Middlebury Language Schools, took over as MIIS President December 31, 2005. President Yu will deliver the gala's welcome address, with David Armanasco of Armanasco Public Relations and KCBA Fox 35 anchor Jodi Jones serving as the evening's co-masters of ceremony.
Tickets for the Global Feast are $250 per person, and up to 50 guests can also purchase tickets to a Private Champagne Reception with Turner. Funds raised will support student scholarships to MIIS.
