Monterey County Recognized for Revitilization of Natividad Medical Center

Recipient of 2009 Challenge Award from the California State Association of Counties

SALINAS, Calif. - December 4, 2009 - Monterey County has been recognized by the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) for the revitalization of the Natividad Medical Center and has been selected as a recipient of the 2009 Challenge Award. Over 200 entries were received from counties across the state in four separate categories. The County will be presented the award by Paul McIntosh, Executive Director of the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) in a ceremony at the Monterey County Board of Supervisors' meeting on December 8th at 10:30 a.m.

For its challenge award entry, Monterey County highlighted the unique public/private partnership Natividad formed with the Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System and the Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula, allowing Natividad to bring about operational improvement and revitalization ensuring its ability to operate within budget. In 2008 the hospital experienced a $10.5 million profit, which was a $35 million turnaround in two years. The partnership proved a highly successful model for revitalization, resulting in the hospital's increased ability to move forward with its goal to be a preferred resource for medical care for Monterey County residents.
