MONTEREY, Calif. - Carmel Marina Waste Management congratulates the Monterey County cities of Carmel, Del Rey Oaks, Pacific Grove, Sand City, Seaside, Marina, and King City for achieving their 50 percent diversion rate by 2000. "Diversion" is the industry term for recycling.

Tonight at a League of California Cities award ceremony, the California Integrated Waste Management Board is recognizing hundreds of California cities for reaching their recycling goals, including all of Carmel Marina Waste Management's service areas. Following the award ceremony, Waste Management, a corporate partner with the League of California Cities, is hosting a reception recognizing its cities.

"Carmel Marina Waste Management commends these cities for their dedicated efforts in recycling and improving the environment," said Mark Arsenault, General Manager of Carmel Marina Waste Management. "We have reached our 50 percent mark - every soda can, newspaper or milk carton adds up and continues to make a difference."

Beginning early next year, Carmel Marina Waste Management's customers will throw all their recyclables into a 64-gallon container rather than separating the materials into three separate bins due to a system called Single-Stream Recycling. "In other areas where we have launched such a system, we have seen recycling increase as much as 40 percent," said Arsenault. "It is more convenient for the customer since it leaves the separating to us."
