Salinas Architectural Firm Recognized for Outstanding Example of Commercial Construction in the U.S.

SALINAS, Calif.-The Grain Tower building in Salinas, CA, designed by Kasavan Architects was named a Grand Award winner by the National Commercial Builders Council (NCBC) during their 2002 Awards of Excellence. The NCBC honored the Grain Tower building, originally built in c.1925 by Associated Seed Growers, for its "conservative minded building approach" including preservation and re-use of materials, reduction of construction waste and energy saving use of daylighting and operable windows. Additions were designed in reference to the original building and other agricultural-industry related structures in the Salinas Valley, preserving its historical significance. "Distinctive barn-like forms were used to create the entry and separately house the vertical circulation in a way not to diminish the power of the original forms", stated Peter Kasavan, Principal of Kasavan Architects. The NCBC recognizes outstanding examples of commercial construction in the United States annually. Award winning projects show superior applications of technology, ingenuity, creativity and construction expertise. Judging is based on the special feature of each project, including floor plan, exterior appeal, overall aesthetics and success in meeting project goals. Bart Wolfe was the Project Architect for Kasavan Architects. The project was built by Mill Construction of Salinas.
