Just Enough Learning® Company Exposes New Threat to Popular Teen Websites
CARMEL, Calif. - February 21, 2006 - The teen content producer, JustEnough® Learning Company has exposed Bots as a new threat to social networking that may undermine the safety and features of popular teen websites such as MySpace and Friendster, as well as AOL and MSN messengers. BOTs, short for robots, are 3rd party computer programs that can be downloaded and then used to send spam to previously secure networking websites.
BOTS offer an easy avenue for ad ware distributors and marketers to send explicit messages to teen users registered on networking websites or using messaging programs. Using BOT applications distributors can send messages to the entire Myspace user population with the content of their choosing.
"When are parents going to understand that a child alone online is like a child alone on the streets, and when are marketers going to understand that using these sorts of technologies usually ends up making bad brand impressions for their clients," Dewey Reid, CEO of Entertainment Advertising Television said. "Unfortunately new technologies are too quickly exploited by marketers before we understand the impact on society and children in particular."
BOTs stunt the purpose of networking sites by sending seemingly custom messages to thousands of members, all in the hopes that the BOT user will increase his or her friend base. BOTs allow users to send spam on networking websites previously safe from spam's guerilla marketing techniques.
JustEnough® uncovered the BOT problem while researching how to ensure safety and security for its own teen website, www.justenough.net.
