Housing Authority of the County of Monterey is Holding an Event at the Sherwood Hall to Distribute Housing Vouchers to Eligible Families on the Waiting List

The Housing Authority of the County of Monterey (HACM) is hosting an event at the Sherwood Hall for families who signed up to be on the Housing Choice Voucher Program's wait list. The wait list was open from July 1-12, 2024, and during that time 5,600 families signed up through the agency's new online portal. The Housing Choice Voucher Program provides assistance for very low-income households (single or family), the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. The wait list is the primary way for families and individuals to have an opportunity to receive a Housing Choice Voucher.
"Our Housing Choice Voucher Program plays a key role in creating and preserving affordable housing, which is central to our mission. Last year, during a similar one-day event, we were able to provide vouchers to over 300 families. Witnessing the joy and relief from those families is what inspired us to hold this event again" said Zulieka Boykin, Executive Director of HACM.
One thousand families from the wait list have been invited to Sherwood Hall on either September 16, 17 or 18 to confirm their eligibility and continue the application process for a voucher. Being placed on the wait list does not guarantee applicants will be eligible for the program. Eligibility is determined based upon HUD income limits at the time of selection from the waiting list, a criminal background check, and if applicable, previous program compliance.
If an applicant is determined to be eligible and completes the application process at the Sherwood Hall event they will receive a Housing Choice Voucher on the spot. At the event there will also be landlords interested in finding potential tenants and housing related community partners providing information and resources for families. The event is cosponsored by the City of Salinas Community Development Department.
