Groundbreaking Ceremony Set for Casa de Esperanza in King City
Housing Authority of the County of Monterey brings partners together to celebrate a renovation project that will provide housing for homeless residents
The Housing Authority of the County of Monterey (HACM) is holding a groundbreaking ceremony for Casa de Esperanza, a housing project in King City. The event is on July 30th from 10:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and will take place at 1130 Broadway Street in King City. The ceremony will bring together community partners and dignitaries to celebrate the launch of a major renovation project that will convert the former 46-unit Days Inn hotel into housing for individuals experiencing homelessness.
HACM has collaborated with King City leadership and Monterey County for more than two years to bring this vital project to life.

"This project is a powerful testament to what partnership and perseverance can accomplish. The Housing Authority was honored to collaborate with the City of King, Monterey County, and other dedicated partner agencies to help secure the $16.7 million needed to revive this development and bring much-needed housing and renewed hope for local residents," said Zulieka Boykin, Executive Director of HACM.
The partner agencies that helped fund this project include the County of Monterey, the Coalition of Homeless Services Providers, County of Monterey Homeless Services, Department of Housing and Community Development, California Department of Health Care Services, King City, and the Central California Alliance for Health.

He adds, "This project embraces a holistic approach to our members' health, recognizing that stable housing is essential to positive health outcomes. By combining supportive housing with high-quality health care services in one location, we empower individuals to improve their well-being and maintain housing stability – advancing our shared vision of Healthy People, Healthy Communities."
Originally part of the state Homekey initiative, the Days Inn property was first purchased by Shangri-La Construction for conversion into supportive housing. After the property went into foreclosure, King City leaders stepped in to salvage the project. With state agency support and grant funding, the City Council purchased the hotel for $4.4 million, then in April transferred ownership to HACM for $1.
HACM's Development Department will oversee the renovation of the two-story facility located on a 1-acre parcel and originally built in 1969. The site will be converted into 46 studio apartments offering stable, affordable housing for individuals experiencing homelessness, particularly those from the Salinas River encampments who were relocated to temporary accommodations.
Building permits have been approved and HACM/MCHADC has issued a Request for Proposal to secure a contractor. Renovation work is expected to begin within the next 60 days, with project completion anticipated by January 2026.
Upon completion, HACM's property management team will oversee operations of Casa de Esperanza and will contract with an outside agency to provide supportive services. With the addition of Casa de Esperanza, HACM owns 52 properties and manages 1,870 units throughout Monterey County.

Created in 1941, The Housing Authority of the County or Monterey (HACM) is a locally controlled public agency that leverages funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and other sources to provide affordable housing and rental assistance to low-income families throughout Monterey County.
