Governor’s Fitness Council to Announce Statewide Competition for K-12 Schools at Pacific Grove Middle School
WHAT:
Jake Steinfeld, Chairman of the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and founder of "Body by Jake," will come to Pacific Grove Middle School to announce the launch of the "Governor's Challenge Competition" on Wednesday, January 24th.
The Governor's Challenge Competition is a statewide fitness competition among k-12 schools that is intended to promote increased physical activity and better health among California's youth. The competition's Grand Prize, a Brand New Fitness Center, and eleven additional prizes of $1,000 of physical activity equipment will be awarded to schools that succeed in getting the highest percentage of students to be physically active 30-60 minutes a day, at least 3 days a week for at least 4 weeks prior to May 31, 2007.

WHY:
With an obesity epidemic soaring among youth and obesity in America, Governor Schwarzenegger helped re-establish the Governor's Council in 2005 to promote physical activity, fitness levels and well being for youth and Californians of all ages. The goal of the program is to get Californians active, thereby setting the stage for California to become the first "Fitness State."
