Gonzales Youth Commissioners Participating in Virtual Workshop to Advance Health Equity

Two-Day Event Will Explore the Factors Needed to Build and Preserve a Healthy Democracy
City of Gonzales Youth Commissioners Aidan Cervantes and Magaly Santos will be participating in a free virtual workshop, Civic Engagement and Civic Infrastructure to Advance Health Equity, hosted by the Roundtable on Population Health Improvement at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
The two-day event is on June 14 and 15, 2021 and will explore the factors needed to build and preserve a healthy democracy. This virtual workshop will examine the relationship between civic engagement, population health, youth participation and health equity in the United States. Speakers will discuss (1) the state of measurement and evidence for civic engagement in relation to health and health equity; (2) infrastructure and institutions that shape civic engagement; (3) the media and information ecosystem; and (4) the ethical and other considerations relevant to civic engagement efforts. Cervantes and Magaly are members of the panel discussing civic infrastructure and are the only youth members on the panel.
The Roundtable on Population Health Improvement brings together multiple sectors and disciplines to broaden the national conversation about the factors that shape our health and to inform and support cross-sector relationships and engagement to transform the conditions for health across U.S. communities. By hosting workshops, spurring individually-authored papers, and organizing action collaboratives, the roundtable brings together members and outside experts, practitioners, community members, researchers, and decision makers in dialogue about models and frameworks, good practices and tools, and the evidence about actions that can contribute to building a strong, healthy, and productive society that cultivates human capital and equal opportunity.
