Five Stevenson School Seniors Named as National Merit Scholarship Finalists
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.-Stevenson School seniors Benjamin Cooper of Portola Valley, Shannon Garber of Carmel, Nicholas Hawley of Pebble Beach, Michael Silberman of Aliso Viejo, and Jason Steinberg of Aptos have been named as finalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition.
Of the 1.3 million juniors in the U.S. who took the PSAT last year, 16,000 advanced to semifinalist status. To become finalists-and to be considered for a National Merit Scholarship-the seniors must demonstrate a high academic performance, gain recommendations from their school leadership and post SAT scores that confirm their PSAT success. The application for finalist status includes a personal essay and information about school and outside activities.
Of the finalists, about 8,000 earn National Merit Scholarships. Scholarship winners will be announced in the spring and throughout the early summer.
