Chefs Craft Cannery Row-Style Gingerbread Village
MONTEREY, Calif. - November 28, 2005 - Chefs from the area's top inns, restaurants and bakeries have joined forces to create a gingerbread village in the style of Cannery Row and Pacific Grove. The village will be on display at the American Tin Cannery December 10-11 and December 17-18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some of the gingerbread structures will be available as silent auction items with proceeds going directly to Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula.
The display will reflect the unique character of Pacific Grove and Cannery Row, with creative structures that include traditional Victorian-style houses, a Star of David house, and possibly a gingerbread version of the American Tin Cannery. Participating businesses include the Sardine Factory, the Centrella Inn, the Martine Inn, Tillie Gorts, the Red House, Central Avenue Bakery, and the Portola Café and Restaurant at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
The highest silent auction bidders will be awarded the gingerbread creations, masterpieces of confection to decorate their homes throughout the holiday season. Gingerbread viewing is free, although visitors can make a contribution to Meals on Wheels, a non-profit community service.

In 1926, the American Can Company opened its sprawling sardine can production plant a short distance over the Pacific Grove city line. The factory produced a purported 26 million cans in its first season of operation, going on to dominate the can supply industry. Today the American Tin Cannery boasts great shopping and an 80-foot "History Wall" in California's first factory outlet.
