CASTROVILLE, Calif. - Recycling has never been easier. Carmel Marina Waste Management will be making it even more convenient for its customers to recycle - no more separating into paper, glass or plastic bins.

This week Carmel Marina Waste Management is beginning construction of its innovative Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), with completion expected in mid-August. A process called Single-Stream Recycling allows customers to toss all recyclables into one bin instead of dividing materials into three separate organizers. The materials are then picked up by Carmel Marina Waste Management and taken to its MRF in Castroville for sorting and processing.

The more people recycle, the better job we're doing for our environment," says Waste Management's District Manager Mark Arsenault.

Single-Stream Recycling has a specially designed feeder that accepts a large load of incoming material and spreads it through separate belts, speed controls, electronic eyes and load levelers onto a high-speed chain-belt conveyor. This feeds the single-stream materials to a primary pre-sorting area where a sorting crew manually removes the large rejects and the cardboard. The materials then go through a series of star screens, air separators, magnets, and shaker screens designed to produce a high-quality mix of materials that can be shipped to processing plants and recycled into new products.
