PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.--The California Summer Music program for young musicians will take up residence at Stevenson School in Pebble Beach from July 6-28, 2002. The San Francisco-based program, now in its seventh year, offers nearly 70 young violinists, violists, cellists, pianists and composers from around the world an intense program of instruction from some of the country's most gifted musicians. This season's highlights include a recital by the Abel-Steinberg Duo, guest artist master classes with pianist Hans Boepple and cellist David Finckel, and a concert featuring works by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. Zwilich is the program's composer-in-residence this year. Considered one of America's leading composers, the multitude of honors she's received includes a Pulitzer Prize in Music in 1983, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a wide variety of distinguished commissions. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and was designated Musical America's Composer of the Year for 1999. Student concerts and master classes are free of charge and open to the public and will be offered nearly every evening of the month. Concerts are held in Keck Auditorium and in the Gallery at the Stevenson Upper School campus, 3152 Forest Lake Road.
