Two Santa Catalina School Athletic Teams Receive Central Coast Sportsmanship Award
Volleyball and Water Polo Teams Honored for Extraordinary Sportsmanship During CCS Playoffs
The Central Coast Section of the California Interscholastic Federation created the CCS Steve Stearns Sportsmanship Award program to recognize teams and individuals that best exemplify the ideals of good sportsmanship. The award is based on the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and good citizenship. Fans and competitors alike are asked to fill out a recognition card when they see any of these behaviors demonstrated during playoffs.
Santa Catalina School displayed exemplary sportsmanship when competing against the Mercy High School volleyball team, as well as the water polo team from Saint Ignatius College Preparatory School this fall. They welcomed the teams with posters, gave seniors special recognition and flowers before the game, and hosted the athletes and their families at a dinner. The athletic directors of both Mercy and Saint Ignatius nominated Santa Catalina for the award.
The Sportsmanship Award recognizes Santa Catalina School's role in helping to change the nature of high school athletics and bring back character, sportsmanship, ethics and integrity. "It was a great team effort, and the award is a great honor for the school," said Zalin, Santa Catalina's volleyball coach and athletic director.
More than 115 schools are members of the California Interscholastic Federation, Central Coast Section, which stretches from San Francisco to King City. Recognizing the impact that high school athletics can play in society, the Federation adopted the principles of "pursuing victory with honor" in November of 1999 with a commitment to character-building goals.
