MONTEREY, Calif. - December 13, 2007 - The Portola Plaza Hotel has announced a multi-million dollar revitalization, including a name change to the Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay, as it moves from a corporate hotel to a destination resort. At the forefront of the revitalization is a completely new, expanded spa and exercise facility. The new spa, which is more than 5,000 square feet, will feature 10 luxuriously appointed treatment rooms including a couples massage room, a full-service salon offering a range of health, beauty and healing therapies, and brand new men's and women's locker rooms with dry saunas and steam showers. Additionally, the new fitness center will feature state-of-the-art aerobic fitness equipment.

"To reflect the upgraded amenities, services, and brand new spa, we have decided to change our name to the Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay," said Robert DeVoe, general manager. "This revitalization project furthers our commitment to providing world-class service to our valued guests and to the local community."

The new, expanded spa will include the same experienced management and treatment team that earned the Spa on the Plaza the prestigious ranking of "Best Spa in Monterey" by the Monterey County Weekly for the past five years. Spa Managers, Camille and Roy Malcolm, have managed the Spa on the Plaza for more than 10 years, and will remain an integral part of the spa's business and operation.

Additional enhancements slated to take place at the Portola Spa & Hotel at Monterey Bay include: a fresh look to the front entrance of the Hotel, upgraded hotel rooms with specialized services, a revitalized pool area, a comprehensive re-design of the Cottonwood Plaza Courtyard, and new carpet in all hotel corridors. The ownership and management of the Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay will remain the same.

The name Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay honors the famed explorer Don Gaspar de Portola and reflects the captivating spirit of the hotel's rich, historical setting. Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Monterey Bay, Fisherman's Wharf, and downtown Monterey, the hotel is surrounded by the scenic, recreational, and cultural jewels of Monterey, as well as the incomparable Monterey Conference Center.
