Point Lobos State Reserve "community Day"

Community Day - October 6, 2007
California State Parks and the Point Lobos Association wish to acknowledge the community support of Point Lobos State Reserve and demonstrate the rich interpretive and educational program available there with a "Community Day" on Saturday, October 6, 2007. This day will feature an expanded docent program with 12 scheduled nature walks, spotting scope stations, activities for children, readings of poetry, and two special walks featuring the abundant birds of the Reserve and the story carried by the rocks that underlie Point Lobos. Courtesy shuttles will depart the Crossroads Shopping Village in Carmel every 10 minutes, bringing guests into the Reserve free of charge. Please see our schedule of activities below.
Point Lobos State Reserve
The residents of Monterey County have long been aware of the special character of Point Lobos State Reserve, a California State Park since 1933. This past year, respondents to a survey by the Monterey County Herald named Point Lobos the top wonder of Monterey County. The dramatic rocky coast and peaceful trails of Point Lobos are visited by more than 300,000 people each year.
Directions & Access
Point Lobos State Reserve is located three miles south of Carmel on Highway 1. Access to the Reserve October 6 will be free of charge for all visitors using the shuttle service from the Crossroads Shopping Village, departing every 10 minutes between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Shuttle bus service will also be provided that day within the Reserve to allow visitors easy access to the different activities.
Point Lobos Association
The Point Lobos Association (PLA) is a cooperating association with the California State Parks, founded in 1978 to enhance the educational and interpretive programs of Point Lobos State Reserve. The PLA contributes to the maintenance of trails and eradication of weeds at Point Lobos, as well as helping to staff and maintain the Whalers Cabin Museum. The PLA underwrites educational outreach programs and provides free educational material for public use, including the quarterly POINT LOBOS Magazine.
Volunteer Docent Program
The PLA also provides financial support for the volunteer docent program at Point Lobos, begun in 1981. Currently, docents contribute more than 6000 hours a year to educational and interpretive activities at the Reserve. They lead approximately 600 scheduled nature walks for visitors annually, and serve an average of 1,500 school children each year.
Cooperating Organizations
Cooperating organizations involved in the Community Day include the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Bay Watch, Monterey Peninsula Regional Parks, and the Marine Mammal Center. Ventana Wildlife Society, the Native Plant Society, Camp Sea Lab of CSUMB, and the Big Sur Land Trust will be on hand, as will the Junior Lifeguard program during this one-day event.
