Natividad Medical Foundation Launches Hospital-Wide Reading Program
Books Collected From Local Book Drive to be Presented to Hospital Staff and Patients
"Natividad Reads! ~ ¡Leyendo con Natividad!" is a hospital-wide initiative promoting access to reading for children and families as a means of improving their health. Features of the program include volunteers from the Salinas Public Library helping patients with prolonged hospitalizations who may have low literacy levels, free books distributed to children and patients in the hospital, a Book Mobile offered by the Salinas Public Library, and the Monterey County Free Libraries Reading Safari regularly visiting the hospital to bring books to Natividad's patients under the age of 5. According to the American Medical Association, "Poor health literacy is a stronger predictor of a person's health than age, income, employment status, education level, and race." Health literacy is essential to understanding prevention and care.
