Monterey Peninsula Restaurants Celebrate and Honor Active Military and Veterans
Tradition Began Over 66 Years Ago
The Fish Hopper, Old Fisherman's Grotto, and Scales Seafood & Steaks restaurants celebrate members of the armed forces this Memorial Day and every day of the year. At these three restaurants in Monterey uniformed members of the military and veterans get the VIP treatment year round.
When members of the military are seated an American flag is placed on their table in recognition of their service. To honor and thank them the table receives a complimentary appetizer, and after their meal dessert for all the guests at the table is "on the house". Proprietors, Sabu Shake, Jr. and Chris Shake are continuing the tradition started by their father Sabu Shake, Sr. in 1950.
"We truly appreciate the sacrifices members of the armed services make to protect our country," states Sabu Shake, Jr. He adds, "We have had many guests who when they see what we are doing for our military and veterans they will send over drinks or I have even seen a diner pick up the tab for the entire meal."
The restaurants have received positive feedback from the service men and women and their families, appreciating the staff for the recognition of their service to our country. Celebrating and honoring them is an honored tradition that will continue at the restaurants for many years to come.
The Fish Hopper is located at 700 Cannery Row, Old Fisherman's Grotto is located at 33 Fisherman's Wharf and Scales Seafood & Steaks is located at 39 Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey. The Fish Hopper in Kona, Hawaii, also owned by the Shakes, carries on the tradition as well.
