Hayward Lumber Company Statement Regarding Clearcutting Protest At

November 2, 2007
MONTEREY, Calif. - November 2, 2007 - In 1997, Hayward Lumber adopted the core value that we should use our leadership to source lumber from sustainable, well-managed forests. Although much of the forest practices in California are quite good, the only way we can verify that the lumber we purchase comes from a sustainable, well-managed forest is to buy wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Today, approximately 10% of the wood Hayward sells is FSC-certified and growing. In three years, we have set a goal to double that number and expect to reach 20% by 2010.

Hayward is the leading supplier of FSC-certified wood on California's central coast and was the first lumber company in the country to stock FSC-certified wood.

When it comes to building materials, green is not just about wood. It is about products that have a lower impact on the environment, are energy efficient and don't release harmful toxins. Green building materials use less water, last longer and require less maintenance than conventional building materials.

Being green is also about how you operate as a business. Hayward Lumber builds new facilities employing green principles such as solar panels, rainwater collection systems, skylights, natural ventilation and heat exchangers that warm outside intake air with exhaust hot air to reduce the use of natural gas. Hayward recycles much of our waste stream and we use waterless urinals and low-flow fixtures in our facilities. Our newest, LEED Gold-certified truss plant incorporated recycled-content and low-toxic materials, including cellulose insulation, gravel recycled from the previous development's concrete pad and low-VOC paints. All of the framing lumber used to build this plant is FSC-certified wood.

Being green is about our total environmental footprint and we are on a path of continuous improvement.

Hayward President, CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer, Bill Hayward is also the Chairman of the Board of the Forest Stewardship Council of the United States. To learn more about the FSC, please visit www.fscus.org .
