MONTEREY, Calif. - March 14, 2008 - Santa Catalina School in Monterey, California, is proud to announce that eight student artists have recently won awards in local and regional art shows.

Creative writing and art pieces from Santa Catalina School students were among 100,000 entries judged in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards of 2008, and among the 10 percent to win Gold Key awards. Three Santa Catalina students were awarded regional Gold Keys for their exceptional artwork. The winners were Amber Clarke for painting, Ariana Patterson for ceramics and glass, and Rosemary Hall for two printmaking pieces (winner of two Gold Keys).

The regional Gold Key winners will go on to be judged at the national level with the results to be announced in April. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, administered by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, offers creative teenagers recognition, exhibition and publication opportunities as well as scholarships.

Locally, four Santa Catalina Students received praise in the Youth Art Competition at the Walter Lee Avery Gallery in Seaside. Santa Catalina School entered 15 pieces in the Youth Art Competition and won the following five awards: Kristina Wasserman, first place for sculpture; Rachael O'Leary, first place for graphics; Rosemary Hall, honorable mention for graphics; Amber Clarke, second place for painting; and Lauren Boczek, honorable mention for photography.

The Youth Art Competition promotes students' talent and aims to give the community hope for the future of Art in Schools. Entries will be on display through March 28 at the Walter Lee Avery Gallery, located inside the Seaside City Hall. Santa Catalina students also have artwork on display at the Cherry Center for the Arts in Carmel as part of the Thinking Out Loud exhibit, which runs through March 30.
