Cannery Row Foundation Kicks Off Its 25th Year, Elects 2008 Board of Directors
Foundation Celebrates “America’s Most Famous Street” Throughout the Year
2008 Cannery Row Foundation board members include: David Armanasco, Ted Balerstreri, James Bridges, Sylvia Fraley, Pat Hathaway, Bill Johnk, Saundra Johnston, Thor Rasmussen, Lou Rudolf (a charter board member) and Art Ring. Bill Watjkowski, retired Monterey director of Community Development, continues as Cannery Row Foundation development coordinator.
Appearing in the Maritime Museum of Monterey in the very near future is board member Bill Johnk's acclaimed historical model of the 1943-1946 "Steinbeck Core" of old Ocean Avenue. The model is on loan to the Foundation by the Oakland Museum of California.
In April the unveiling of a bronze memorial dedicated to the divers of the Old Row will occur at San Carlos Beach Park. The memorial is a tribute to the courage of the hard-hat divers, whose dangerous underwater work on hoppers and their pipelines to the canneries allowed Cannery Row to evolve into the Sardine Capital of the World.
