Skilled nursing facility Olympics bring fun and camaraderie to Carmel Hills Care Center
The ninth annual skilled nursing facility Olympics was held at Carmel Hills Care Center in Monterey, celebrating Skilled Nursing Week organized by the American Health Care Association.
"We're here at Carmel Hills Care Center skilled nursing facility in Monterey, and we're celebrating skilled nursing week," said Jarrod Christensen, an administrator ar Carmel Hills. "That is put together by the American Health Care Association, celebrating all things that we do here in skilled nursing facilities."
The event featured various competitions designed to highlight the challenges faced by residents, including a wheelchair obstacle course.
"It's really a celebration for staff. Build some camaraderie, some team, teamwork. But also, highlight some of the challenges our residents face," said Christensen. "It's a way to, you know, lighthearted, you know, some fun with staff in wheelchairs, but then also understand the mobility challenges that our residents face also."
Participants also wore goggles with Vaseline to simulate impaired vision and rubber gloves to experience tactile difficulties.
"It's really just an opportunity to bond. You know, we all usually get a good laugh. Managing a wheelchair is much more difficult than it looks," said Christensen.
Other events included a bed-making competition to see who could make the neatest bed the fastest and a lighthearted commode toss.
"There's a fourth event. This one's extremely lighthearted. We do have, commode toss," the Christensen. Prizes such as summer beach packages, beach chairs, and towels were awarded to participants.
"It's an opportunity for everybody to come here to honor the things that we do, the services we provide on a daily basis to our residents," said Christensen. "Health care can be a very serious thing. And so how can we bring some light and livelihood into it?"
