Gonzales unveils first digital billboard on Highway 101
City aims to boost communication, support local businesses
City of Gonzales celebrated the installation of its first digital billboard along Highway 101 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Feb. 26.
The high-resolution display, operated by Legacy Signs, is positioned on a single monopole to reach both northbound and southbound traffic. It is designed with architectural elements inspired by Gonzales' visual character, including references to the city's Fourth Street archway and Alta Street corridor.
"This project is about strengthening how we communicate with our community and the region," said Gonzales City Manager Carmen Gil. "The digital billboard will also allow the City to share timely public safety updates, promote local events and businesses, and generate revenue that supports City services, all in a way that reflects Gonzales' identity."
Monterey County Supervisor Chris Lopez also shared his enthusiasm for the project on social media, saying, "What a great day for a ribbon cutting! I can feel the momentum in Gonzales as we work to move beyond words and towards action to solve the challenges of our time. The community center, a new sewer, and now a billboard and very soon housing. The inertia is real! The new sign, likely the first in the tri-county area, is now up and functional!"
The billboard is expected to reach thousands of daily commuters traveling through the Salinas Valley.
In addition to commercial advertising, the billboard will display city-endorsed announcements, emergency alerts from law enforcement and fire services, and messages during natural disasters.
Local businesses can access discounted advertising opportunities, giving the platform a dual role in promoting economic development and community engagement. For advertising information, individuals can visit goldenbearoutdoor.com.
