California Coastal Commission to hold meeting in Gonzales
San Diego, Ventura and Half Moon Bay are the sort of places the California Coastal Commission typically meets at for its monthly public hearings. But in April, the Commission will be changing things up, heading inland to the city of Gonzales.
While the Salinas Valley town of around 9,000 people is roughly 40 minutes away from the coast, holding April's meeting there is part of the Commission's effort to increasingly involve inland communities in its decision making.
According to the Commission, the decisions it makes often intersect with issues important to inland communities, including those related to water, agriculture, infrastructure and public access.
The meeting will be held at the recently opened Dennis and Janice Caprara Community Center from April 15-17 and consists of a public comment period, reports from the Commission's directors and consideration of agenda items affecting California's coastal regions.
"We are honored to welcome the California Coastal Commission to Gonzales," said Carmen Gil, city manager for Gonzales in a prepared statement.
"Hosting this meeting at the Dennis and Janice Caprara Community Center reflects Gonzales' growing role as a regional gathering place and creates an opportunity for broader public participation in important statewide discussions," Gil said.
District 3 Supervisor for Monterey County, Chris Lopez, recently joined the Commission as Monterey County's newest representative.
"Coastal policy affects far more than the shoreline and bringing the Commission to Gonzales acknowledges the important role inland communities play in the long-term stewardship of our coast and shared resources," said Lopez in a prepared statement.
"This meeting is an opportunity to broaden public access and make sure more communities in Monterey County can directly engage in decisions that affect our region," Lopez said.
The Dennis and Janice Caprara Community Center is located at 620 Fifth Street in Gonzales.
